A European seminar entitled '2012 MarineTargets: European marine strategy and issues in the high seas' will take place in Brest, France, from 9 to 11 December.

On the basis of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Member States of the European Union are committed to assessing and preserving the quality of their marine environment. With the ambitious goal of maintaining or achieving the 'good environmental status' of marine environment by 2020, the directive is the environmental pillar of the European maritime strategy. It is thus important to define the good environmental conditions of marine environment by 2012.

The high seas, which represent 64% of the world maritime surface, will be one of the core issues of the discussions. High seas are located beyond the 200-nautical-mile zone, which is beyond national jurisdictions. Issues in the high seas are manifold and relevant worldwide: economic (deep-sea fishing, marine research, bio-prospecting, mining projects, etc.), legal (changes in the law of the sea and international conventions) and environmental.

The seminar, which will be held as part of the French Presidency of the European Union, is intended for expert authorities within ministries, international bodies, research bodies, international organisations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), fishing organisations and other stakeholders at international level. For further information, please visit:
