The International Astronomical Union (IAU) will hold a symposium on the role of astronomy in society and culture in Paris, France, from 19 to 23 January 2009.
The aim of this event is to provide a global, and as well as detailed, view of the many activities that link astronomy to diverse cultures. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss the ways these activities can be improved upon, from local to international levels.
Three broad subjects are on the agenda:
- 'Astronomy in culture and the culture of astronomy',
- 'Astronomy and society',
