The 2009 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will be held from 12 to 16 February 2009 in Chicago, USA.

The theme of this year's meeting is 'Our planet and its life: origins and futures'. This is because it coincides with the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book 'On the origin of species by means of natural selection'.

The large-scale event will be composed of 175 symposia, seminars, and career development workshops. Plenary and topical lectures by some of the world's leading scientists and engineers will also be held.

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) will contribute to five sessions:
- 'New approaches to the therapy of infectious diseases';
- 'Keeping the lights on: the revival of nuclear energy for our future';
- 'Life beneath our feet: research challenges in soil biodiversity';
- 'Preimplantation genetic diagnosis: beyond natural selection?';
- 'Nanofood for healthier living?'.For further information, please visit:
