The EU-funded EUDIMENSIONS project is organising its final conference on 'Local dimensions of a wider European neighbourhood' on 7 May in Brussels, Belgium.

This conference focuses on the actual and potential roles of civil society in developing new forms of political, economic and socio-cultural cooperation within the emerging 'New European Neighbourhood'. At a more general level, the organisers intend to prompt a critical European debate over the significance of civil society in terms of governance and democratic development. This debate will be embedded in concrete national contexts where discrepancies between 'EU-centric' notions of civil society and local experience have become evident.

A further thematic focus of the conference is that of the specific experiences of civil society cooperation in areas such as economic development, gender, cultural and educational issues, minority rights, public health issues and the environment.

EUDIMENSIONS ('Local dimensions of a wider European neighbourhood: developing political community through practices and discourses of cross-border cooperation') has been funded under the 'Citizens and governance in a knowledge-based society' theme of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).For further information, please visit:
