The European Commission is organizing a workshop on "Monitoring and research for mitigating seismic and volcanic risk" in Reykjavik, Iceland, on 20-22 October 1994. The workshop is organized in the framework of the Community's Environment programme, with particular reference to its subprogramme on climatology and natural hazards research.The aim of the workshop is to create a bridge between efforts in Iceland and in other European countries aiming towards seismic and volcanic risk mitigation and hazard prediction. Significant work has been carried out in Iceland in this field in recent years, including the development of high-level technology for monitoring and alert, the collection of high-quality data, research towards hazard assessment and prediction, and civil defence measures.The workshop will include the following sessions:- Present-day tectonism of Iceland;- Ongoing projects in Iceland aiming at mitigating seismic and volcanic risk;- Presentation by Commission experts of European projects in the fields of seismic and volcanic risk mitigation and prediction.For further information, please contact:
