A major conference entitled "The role of technology transfer projects in the innovation process" will take place in Luxembourg on 21-23 February 1995. The event is being organized by DG XIII of the European Commission.

The conference is concerned with the role of technology transfer in the innovation process. It is intended to appeal directly to SMEs and organizations such as municipal authorities requiring practical advice on acquiring and using new technology.

The conference will be of interest to organizations that wish to participate in future Community programmes, and to policy makers and planners responsible for stimulating the diffusion and use of technology and exploiting the scientific and technical resources of countries and regions.

The conference will involve plenary and parallel sessions. Broad themes of general interest will include:

- The need and characteristics of technology transfer projects;
- Barriers to technology transfer;
- Cost and benefits of participation;
- Interface with national programmes;
- Programme structure, management and dissemination strategies;
- Characteristics of Commission activities in this area.

More specialized coverage will be given to issues affecting the performance organizations in technology transfer projects, as follows:

- Establishing the technology needs of users;
- Recognizing opportunities and markets for technology suppliers;
