An international conference on "East-West gas and electricity interconnections" will take place in Budapest, Hungary, on 27-28 October 1994.

The conference, organized by the European Commission (DG XVII) in the context of the SYNERGY programme, will examine key aspects of gas and electricity connections between Eastern and Western Europe. It aims to improve energy production and transmission in Eastern and Western Europe and the independent States of the former Soviet Union, and to further secure the availability of energy sources in the continent of Europe as a whole.

Sessions will be held on the following:

- The European energy supply and demand scene: current situation and prospects for gas and electricity;
- Incentives and constraints for electricity and gas interconnections;
- Regional approaches to East-West electricity and gas interconnections;
- Organizational and contractual aspects of interconnections for the electricity and gas sectors;
- Financial aspects of interconnections.

Participants will include decision-makers from central and local governments, electricity utilities, major gas companies, industrial enterprises and associations, major engineering and construction companies, banks and other financial organizations, and manufacturing firms.
