'Adapting to global change at the coast: leadership, innovation and investment', London, UK
Across the world coasts are dynamic and ever-changing. In recent years, an improved understanding of natural processes has generated new concepts in the management of coastal landforms, water bodies and ecosystems. However, social and economic changes, which are just as important in providing the context for sustainable management, cannot be overlooked.
The event will look at three themes: 'Global change and managing environmental risk', 'Developing the marine and coastal economy' and 'tackling inequality in coastal communities'.
The 'Global change and managing environmental risk' theme will examine how as world development progresses human interventions have increasing impacts on climate, on water, on living resources, and on ecosystem processes. This trend poses many risks for society and for our economies.
The 'Developing the marine and coastal economy' theme will look at how coastal and maritime policies for the EU and elsewhere aim to focus attention on the contribution of the coast and seas to furthering growth and jobs within the context of sustainable development. Increasingly, the need is for integrated planning across the land/sea divide to ensure that policies for different forms of economic development, environmental protection, infrastructure and community development are 'joined up'.
The third theme, 'Tackling inequality in coastal communities' will highlight how coastal communities should benefit from coastal and maritime policy, although there is a balance to be achieved between local and national benefit. The integration of local social needs into coastal management policy is hampered by poorly understood relationships and policy solutions are in their infancy. For further information, please visit:
