Seventh Iberian Congress of African Studies, Lisbon, Portugal
The event will focus on the topic of '50 years of African independence: challenges to modernity'. A half century after the independence of most African countries, the continent is facing a range of new opportunities for international dialogue. These run counter to traditional assumptions that relate to the historical relationship with former colonising countries while valuing the nature and variety of local cultural heritages.
Various African societies have found innovative responses to the challenges of globalisation, either relating to the fields of trade, politics and culture or to the complex scenarios of economic, environmental and energy crises that have been affecting all humanity. These responses and the accompanying re-readings of the past have been the basis of profound identity shifts that reveal the weaknesses of attempts to apply external models of society and state of European and American origin to African countries.
The event will have three plenary sessions:
- 'Colonial history and preparation of independence',
- 'African state in debate',
- 'African modernities'.
There will also be 42 panel discussions concerning a wide range of Africa and African studies-related themes and topics. For further information, please visit:
