A workshop on regional strategies on active ageing will take place in Brussels, Belgium on 23 September 2010.

Regions in Europe often lack strategies dealing with the issues of demographic development and ageing. Mostly they still see both as a threat rather than an opportunity. The latter, though, offers opportunities for new services and products. This can boost companies and regional service providers, helping them to gain competitive advantages over competitors in other regions and eventually creating new jobs and employment.

One of the partners in the workshop is the Silver Economy Network of European Regions (Senaer). Some of the member regions have strategies developed and in place from which could serve as inspiration for others. This includes programmes ranging from dedicated support and funding programmes, such as the one in the Gelderland region (Netherlands), to dedicated policy programmes in regions like Limburg (Netherlands), Limousin (France) and Extremadura (Spain) and the dedicated 'Senior economy' initiative in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).

Workshop objectives are to:
- inform about the objectives of the European Year for Active Ageing & Intergenerational Solidarity 2012,
- develop a European exchange of information on activities and initiatives in different European regions,
- identify areas for cooperation which may lead to the establishment of partner consortia,
- develop and submit project proposals to European Commission funding programmes. For further information, please visit:
