'The publics of Europe and the European public sphere: tracing the architects and trespassers of borders and boundaries in Europe', Brussels, Belgium
Europe continues to shape itself as the concepts of nation state are challenged by an unprecedented degree of intergovernmental and supranational institutionalisation. The role of the European citizen within this transformation, however, is minimal.
The conference will emphasise whether there is an emerging transnational institutional basis in which an inclusive, democratic European public sphere may be built. Central to this premise is the mobility of the European citizen whose identity is no longer exclusively linked to a local territory. Non-territorial identities are also emerging that link the citizen to distant political entities and hard-to-imagine collectives. Within these emerging identities, mobility and institutionalisation, is a public sphere in transition.
Eurosphere researchers will present empirical findings and perspectives of their study on public spheres carried out in 16 European countries and will attempt to decipher the consequences for individuals, groups, publics, and diversity.
This event is part of the Eurosphere ('Diversity and the European public sphere - toward a citizens' Europe') project, which is funded under the Sixth Framework Programme. For further information, please visit:
