'New and growing inequalities: a challenge for the social, economic and democratic development of the European Union', Brussels, Belgium
Over the past few decades, economic and employment growth has in general improved overall living standards and many governments have been able to devote more resources to social policy interventions. However, despite growth and the redistributive effect of social protection policies, inequalities have often increased, sometimes to levels not seen before. Poverty and social exclusion remain major issues in most EU countries, although there are substantial differences across Europe.
The current economic crisis is likely to make the situation worse for many of Europe's citizens and to actually increase social and economic inequalities. Such trends and policies aimed at addressing them have already been well documented by researchers, in particular through research funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programmes.
In response to the new 'Europe 2020' strategy with its emphasis on 'inclusive growth - a high-employment economy delivering economic, social and territorial cohesion', the aim of this conference is to give an overview of the contribution of research in social sciences and the humanities to the analysis of current challenges. For further information, please send your name, surname and organisation to:
