A workshop on skills for IPv6 will be held on 13 December 2010 in Ghent, Belgium.
Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a version of the internet protocol that is designed to replace the current Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4). The reason for this is that the range of addresses used on the internet is nearly exhausted.
IPv6 has a vastly larger address space than IPv4, and will solve problems of upcoming address availability. The space comes from the use of a 128-bit address, whereas IPv4 uses only 32 bits. The use of IPv6 expansion provides flexibility in allocating addresses and routing traffic and eliminates the primary need for network address translation (NAT), which gained widespread use as a way of alleviating the potential IPv4 address exhaustion. IPv6 also implements other new features which experts have said may open new possibilities for online media.
