A conference on Mediterranean climate variability and predictability will be held from 6 to 9 June 2011 in Lecce, Italy.

Sponsored by the European Science Foundation, the Medclivar ('Mediterranean climate variability and predictability') programme aims to coordinate and promote the study of the Mediterranean climate. The peculiar geographical location and the topographical features of the Mediterranean area make it a region which is highly sensitive to global climate change.

The conference will present available knowledge on future climate change at the regional level, analyse climate change impacts on Mediterranean societies and present and discuss results of international and national research projects. The event will also seek to identify research hotspots and critical issues, bring together experts from complementary fields of climate research and discuss future climate research targets in the Mediterranean region.

Topics to be covered at the conference include:
- Mediterranean climate: relevant and important scientific issues;
- paleoclimatic evidence from the Mediterranean region;
- synoptic patterns: climatology and trends;
- the circulation of the Mediterranean Sea: trends and changes;
- extremes and impacts of climate variability in Mediterranean region;
- aerosols chemistry and climate;
- modeling of the Mediterranean climate system;
- the climate of the Mediterranean region in future climate projections.For further information, please visit: http://www.medclivar.eu/(opens in new window)
