A conference on 'Diversity of rural areas in Europe and the challenge of policy integration' will be held on 22 February 2011 in Brussels, Belgium.

The event is sponsored by the 'Rural future networks' (Rufus) project. Funded under the Seventh Framework Programme, the project has worked to address the multifunctional aspects of rural areas. It assessed the possible combinations of policy regimes to build up networks and to ensure sustainable and integrated rural development. This event will mark the final phase of the project.

The conference is will look at the results of the Rufus project, and to discuss them with a wider audience including policymakers, participants of the related research projects, stakeholders and the research community. Specific topics will include:
- typology of rural areas;
- typologies as background for policy programming;
- mapping and visualisation of development potentials;
- mapping of ecological information on a European scale;
- case studies of policy integration on the local level;
- new challenges for rural-urban-linkages.
