International Academy of Astronautics planetary defence conference, Bucharest, Romania
Since the first studies started in the early 1990s, there have been significant advances in research on planetary defence. This area of science is often concerned with looking at space objects which cross the Earth's orbit, creating a potential hazard for the planet.
These objects can range in size from just a few centimetres to several kilometres across. When the former fall into the Earth's atmosphere, they burn up, causing no harm. The latter, though, are thought to perhaps have caused large destruction in the past.
The theme for the conference is 'From threat to action'. This will include such topics as:
- 'Potentially hazardous objects - recent progress';
- 'Discovery and tracking resources and plans';
- 'Impacts, consequences and education';
- 'Mission planning and technologies';
- 'Campaign planning';
- 'Legal, policy, political framework for planetary defence;'
- 'Moving forward on planetary defence'.For further information, please visit: http://www.pdc2011.org/(opens in new window)
