An information day on the specific programme on information technologies (ESPRIT) will be held on 13 December 1994 in Brussels.

Information technology (IT) is at the heart of a global transformation of the economy. The Community RTD programme in IT offers to industrial and scientific undertakings in the European Union the opportunity to play a key role in the transition towards the information society.

The new information technology specific programme of the Fourth Framework Programme aims to provide timely access to advanced technologies and their integration into applications, thus meeting the evolving user and market requirements. The programme covers the years 1994-1998 and has a total budget of ECU 1.9 billion.

The first call for proposals for the information technology programme (ESPRIT) will be published on 15 December 1994 with a second one following on 15 March 1995. It has a budget of about ECU 300 million allocated to selected specific tasks in underpinning technologies, long-term research and focused clusters, as described in the work programme. It is important to note that this is a focused call, which covers specific tasks, and not the entire work programme. Information on additional upcoming calls will also be provided in the information package and during the information day.

This event will gather potential proposers from all the 17 EU and EEA member States. The participation of representatives from SMEs is especially encouraged. Since substantial changes in the procedures for calls, evaluations and accompanying measures have taken place, the day will also be valuable for those who have already participated in European Community RTD activities.

Parallel sessions in different domains are an integral part of the day's agenda. Participants will be able to give a short presentation on their company or institution and indicate the areas of the call in which they are interested or planning to propose. A bulletin board will also be made available for one-page contact or information notes. The full staff of the IT programme will be available to answer questions.

The information day will include:

- Introduction by Mr. G. Metakides, Director, DG III/F, RTD Information Technologies;
- Procedures and special provisions for SMEs;
- Questions and answers;
- Parallel sessions and company presentations for different domains:
. Software technologies, technologies for IT components and subsystems;
. Multimedia technologies, long-term research, open microprocessor systems;
. Initiative, high performance computing and networking;
. Technologies for business processes and integration in manufacturing.

Those attending the information day will receive the IT work programme and an information package. These may also be received by mail. The same information will be available on-line for proposers with access to Internet or ECHO services. These services will be available free of charge from 1 December 1994:
- Internet World-Wide Web: www.echo.lu or www.ecrc.de;
- ECHO: NUA 0270448112 / Password: ECHO.
