The Eighth International Symposium on Subsurface Microbiology will take place from 11 to 16 September 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

The unseen, microbal ecosystems often go unnoticed, but are some of the largest on Earth. At the same time, they are among the least investigated. They provide mankind with essential resources such as clean drinking water or crude oil, where microbes are catalysing many important geochemical reactions.

The conference will examine the fundamental principles of subsurface microbial life such as energy metabolism in oligotrophic shallow aquifers and deep terrestrial or marine systems. Carbon-rich environments, like shallow contaminated aquifers and deep oil fields, will be an additional focal point.

As with previous events in the same series, microbial ecology and the latest technical developments in sampling subsurface environments and sample processing will be of major interest. Interdisciplinary aspects like microbe-mineral interactions will open the conference to a wider community of environmental scientists. For further information, please visit: http://www.issm2011.com(opens in new window)
