12th European Molecular Biology Organisation Conference, Heidelberg, Germany
Mental illness has considerable consequences for societies and economies. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has found that neurological and behavioural disorders represent a major global health problem, and are prevalent among all age groups, social groups and cultures. The WHO estimates that one-quarter of individuals develop one or more mental and/or behavioural disorders in their lifetime; depression alone is a leading cause of disability, affecting about 121 million people worldwide.
The conference will examine the extent and societal impact of mental illness. Experts from a wide range of disciplines will explore the ethical and social implications and explain the latest scientific knowledge on their causes and treatment. The conference will also see debate on a number of topics including the definition of mental disorders, financial interests in their diagnosis and treatment, and controversial therapies. For further information, please visit: http://www.embo.org/science-policy/science-society/conferences/2011.html(opens in new window)
