An event entitled 'International symposium on ionotropic glutamate receptors' will take place from 16 to 17 February 2012 in Valencia, Spain.

Onotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are ligand-gated cation channels which are activated in response to binding of glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter in mammals. Although iGluRs are present both in peripheral and central nervous system cells, the best known are those located in brain, where they play critical roles in different cerebral functions including synaptic plasticity, learning and memory processes. The ability of synapses to modify their synaptic strength in response to activity (synaptic plasticity) is a fundamental property of the nervous system which seems an essential component of learning and memory.

The conference will bring together researchers in this field to discuss recent advances in modulation of transport, clustering and function of iGluRs by different mechanisms including phosphorylation, S-nitrosylation or subunits composition of the receptors, as well as by interaction with other proteins or modulators. Discussion will include, therapeutic implications of the above studies in different pathological situations and the role of the N-methyl d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist memantine in the treatment of Alzheimer´s disease. For further information, please visit: here(opens in new window)
