An event entitled 'The development of European identities: policy and research issues' will take place on 9 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.

National identity defines identity and sense of belonging to one state or to one nation. It can also mean a feeling that one shares with a group of people, regardless of citizenship status. Studies have shown that a person's national identity is a direct result of the presence of elements from the 'common points' in people's daily lives: national symbols, language, national colors, the nation's history, national consciousness, blood ties, culture, music, cuisine, radio, television, etc.

The event will feature a number of issues such as the evolution of a European identity in terms the creation of new distinct identity or identities, especially in the current state of financial, economic and social crisis. It will also focus on EU-funded research projects in the field of European identity and identities. For more information please send an email to: Andreas.Obermaier@ec.europa.eu
