A conference entitled 'Implementing flood resilience' will take place from 27 to 28 September 2012 in Athens, Greece.

The extent and consequences of recent flood events in Europe and worldwide showed that the existing flood defence structures do not guarantee a sufficient protection level for people and properties. In 2010, heavy rainfall from different storms across parts of Europe caused massive amounts of flooding - some water moving slowly across river plains and farmland, some moving swiftly through cities and villages.

Global warming is projected to intensify the hydrological cycle and increase the magnitude and frequency of intense precipitation events in many parts of Europe. Science and flood resilience technology are seeking to increase efficiency and reduce damage costs in the face of this significant challenge.

The conference will bring together scientists, researchers, planners and industry representatives to discuss some of the latest and innovative flood resilience technologies and systems, testing of standards, damage modelling, decision support and future potential.

The event is sponsored by the EU-funded 'Smart resilience technology, systems and tools' (SMARTEST) project. For further information, please visit: http://floodresilience.eu/conference/(opens in new window)
