The 'Sensor- based sorting 2012' conference and SATURN project results workshop will take place from 17 to 19 April 2012 in Aachen, Germany.

In the past, the development of new processing techniques was influenced by a focus on mineral raw materials. Waste processing methods, by contrast, were developed as an independent field of activity with specialised process technologies for waste materials. Today, many sensor based machines are available for the treatment of primary and secondary raw materials. As the application ranges of these sorting machines expands, the relevance of sensor-based sorting techniques is increasing.

The event will highlight sorting operations which detect diverse characteristics of feed material by the use of intelligent sensor technology followed by a selective discharge of positively identified particles. The programme will include presentations, a poster presentation and an exhibition.

The conference will also feature a workshop on final results of the EU-funded 'Sensor-sorting automated technology for advanced recovery of non-ferrous metals' (SATURN) project. This will be the final workshop for the dissemination of results of a highly successful demonstration plant, which focuses on the enhanced recovery of non-ferrous metals from waste using sensor-based sorting technology. Starting in August 2009, a pilot plant has been installed and demonstrated in Salzgitter, Germany and in operation since October 2009. The project has been able to achieve significant results - such as over 97% purity of aluminium recovered. This innovative sensor sorting process is now being tested and optimised under real market conditions.

The workshop is mainly targeted at waste managers, operators and industry stakeholders, experts and municipal waste managers. For further information on the conference, please visit: here(opens in new window)
