'H5N1 research: biosafety, biosecurity and bioethics', London, UK
Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 is also known as 'bird flu'. It is a subtype of the influenza A virus which can cause illness in humans and many other animal species. Outbreaks of H5N1 have been reported worldwide.
Research in this field is going on and includes to the creation of modified H5N1 viruses in a lab setting. The biosafety and biosecurity conditions under which further research is conducted has recently caused some great concern. A readily transmitted H5N1 virus could be extraordinarily damaging and the risk for accidental release is significant. However, the knowledge gained by these and future experiments under the appropriate safeguards is likely to allow for critical understanding of influenza transmission and virulence.
The event will bring together researchers and students to discuss the practice and policy of H5N1 research. For further information, please visit: http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/viruses/(opens in new window)
