Microbial biofilms are as common in nature as the microorganisms that create them. Virtually any liquid environment where microorganisms are subject to stress or flow will create conditions for biofilm growth. This can be as innocuous as the slime on stones in a stream, or as life-threatening as the biofilm infections that affect the lungs of children with cystic fibrosis. In fact, numerous human diseases, industrial processing problems and plant and animal health issues are caused by microbial biofilms. Most human infections are also caused by biofilm organisms, yet physicians do not have a sensitivity test to determine which antibiotics will be effective against them.
However, biofilms are an integral part of the natural environment and can also serve very beneficial purposes, such as in the treatment of drinking water, wastewater and detoxification of hazardous waste.
The event will see researchers sharing views and ideas related to latest research in this field, with the aim to capitalize on the multidisciplinary nature of this research topic.For further information, please visit:
