A conference entitled 'Coast, Marine Structures and Breakwaters 2013: From Sea to Shore - Meeting the Challenges of the Sea' will take place from 17 to 20 September 2013 in Edinburg, UK.

Waves, generated primarily by the wind, propagate from the ocean to the shoreline across the continental shelves. These waves undergo many processes before they dissipate in the surf zone: refraction, diffraction, shoaling, and breaking. The energy and momentum associated with the waves arriving at the surf zone is used to create longshore and cross-shore currents that move the sand from beaches. When more sand is carried away from a site than towards it, this results in beach erosion.

The ongoing rise in the sea level due to global warming has a pervasive effect on shoreline retreat. Much research is being conducted across the world to develop predictive models of this erosion process.

The event will be addressing the developments in offshore and nearshore energy production, procurement, issues with coastal defence, as well as the construction, management and refurbishment of all coastal assets. Attendees will discuss the latest developments in the field with emphasis on aspects such as fluid loadings, resource modelling, and interactions with the environment, construction, installation, cabling, servicing and maintenance. For further information, please visit
