Early studies of mitochondria focused on their bioenergetic role, but scientist now appreciate the importance of these organelles in a wide range of cellular functions and signalling events. The development of animal models, systems-based approaches and dynamic imaging techniques are proving critical in unravelling the significance and complexity of mitochondrial behaviour.
