Chitin is a polysaccharide found in the outer skeleton of insects, crabs, shrimps and lobsters, as well as in internal structures of other invertebrates. Chitin is composed of ß(1-4) linked units of the amino sugar N-acetyl-glucosamine. It is the main source of production of chitosan, which is used as a flocculating, wound healing, sizing and strengthening agent for paper and a delivery vehicle for pharmaceuticals and genes.
Two centuries after the discovery of chitin, it is widely accepted that this biopolymer is an important biomaterial in many respects. Numerous studies on chitin have focused on its biomedical applications. However, there is still room for further research. Chitin is a potential energy source as well as gene and drug delivery carrier. It also has potential in the emerging field of nanobiotechnology.
