A spinal cord injury usually happens because of a sudden severe blow to the spine. Often this is the result of a car accident, fall, gunshot, or sporting accident. Sometimes the spinal cord is damaged by infection or spinal stenosis, or by a birth defect, such as spina bifida. Unfortunately, there's no way to reverse damage to the spinal cord. Researchers are continually working on new treatments, including prostheses and medications that may promote nerve cell regeneration or improve the function of the nerves that remain after a spinal cord injury.
The conference will be covering cell therapy with stem cells or olfactory ensheathing glia, immunomodulation and glial scar regulation, nanomaterials and scaffolds.
