The First International Conference on the Evaluation of RTD Programmes will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 26-28 April 1995. The organization of this event demonstrates the important role of evaluation in the specific programmes implementing the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development and demonstration (1998-1998). The European Commission's Scientific and Technical Research Committee (CREST), which is responsible for assisting the Commission in the field of scientific research and technological development, has recently established an ad-hoc committee dealing with evaluation.

The conference aims to:

- Bring together experts in the evaluation of RTD and establish a basis for discussion and further cooperation between the European Union, non-EU countries and international organizations;
- Review the experience of EU and non-EU countries in the field of RTD evaluation;
- Present the latest results in the field of RTD evaluation of work carried out under DG XII of the Commission.

The conference programme includes sessions on:

- EU activities in RTD evaluation;
- Evaluation activities: The international experience;
- Evaluating industrial research;
- New approaches to the evaluation of RTD.
