In the framework of the THERMIE programme for the promotion of energy efficient technologies, the European Commission, DG XVII, is holding a series of workshops on "Introduction to technology for utilizing sod peat and milled peat products in Estonia". The workshops will take place in Estonia on 20 February 1995 (in Tallinn), on 21 February 1995 (in Tartu) and on 22 February 1995 (in Rakvere).

In an effort to reduce their overall dependence on imported fuels and improve the balance of payments, the Estonian Government has adopted a national programme for the utilization of indigenous resources of peat and wood fuels. A comprehensive programme for conversion of oil, gas and coal fired district heating boilers to locally produced peat and wood is currently under way.

The aim of the workshops is to assist the national programme by sharing the innovative technical advances in production and boiler technology with peat producers and users and to provide them with information on the benefits of the effective utilization of this technology. The following topics will be covered:

- Economic issues;
- Socio-economic issues;
- Introduction to peat land development and preparation technology, including the latest developments in sod peat and milled peat technology;
- Boiler technology, including boiler design, combustion technology, fuel handling and storage;
- Environmental issues, including ash handling and disposal, and dust levels.

The workshops will be of interest to boiler suppliers and manufacturers, energy consultants, peat producers, peat harvesting equipment manufacturers, peat research institutes, industrialists and large energy consumers.
