Belgium
A Telematics Engineering Conference on the Telematics Applications Programme will take place on 3 May 1995 in Brussels. This will be followed on 4 May 1995 by the first of five events on the topic of process re-engineering applied to telematics applications, which is an important research activity of Telematics Engineering.

Both events are being organized by Directorate C of DG XIII of the European Commission which is responsible for the Telematics Applications Programme under the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development and demonstration (1994-1998).

Telematics Engineering is a new field of investigation within the Telematics Applications Programme. It is concerned with identifying the appropriate methods, models, techniques and tools for the efficient introduction, implementation and validation of new telematics applications, systems and services.

The Telematics Engineering Conference is designed as an information dissemination event where the results of a number of preparatory actions in the field will be presented. These small projects have been undertaken as accompanying measures under the Third Framework Programme in anticipation of the Telematics Applications Programme call for proposals in Telematics Engineering, which was launched on 15 March 1995. They include:

- Project T-BOOK: An information base for telematics application engineering;
- Project MATISSE: Managerial approach for telematics systems and services evaluation;
- Project STARTEL: Survey and assessment of platforms for telematics engineering;
- Project MANDATE: Management of the development of applications in telematics engineering;
- Project PEPITA: Process engineering trends for public and private organizations requiring integrated telematics applications.

The objective of the conference is to distribute the results of the projects in question, to raise awareness of the key issues involved, and to provide a meeting place for the exchange of ideas.

The PEPITA project is organizing a workshop on process re-engineering in Brussels on 4 May 1995. In addition, four supplementary seminars will be held in May in various Member States.

The objective of the workshop and seminars is to raise awareness of the state of the art and future trends in process re-engineering in the user organizations of the different Telematics Applications Programme areas (hospitals, administrations, universities, etc.).

The tentative schedule for the seminars is as follows:

- Stockholm (Sweden): 16 May 1995;
- Bari (Italy): 19 May 1995;
- Madrid (Spain): 23 May 1995;
- Strasbourg (France): 30 May 1995.

The four seminars will be organized in close collaboration with the local VALUE Relay Centres and will focus on the opportunities for public and private organizations to become acquainted with the process re-engineering issues that are important for the success of telematics applications:

- Impact of new telematics applications on the evolution of administrative procedures;
- Possibilities offered by telematics applications for faster adaptation of work processes to changing user needs.
