As part of its THERMIE programme for the promotion of efficient energy technologies, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy (DG XVII) will hold a workshop on "Platform abandonment" in Houston, USA, on 2 May 1995.

The workshop will examine European technologies in abandonment, decommissioning and removal of offshore structures applied to North Sea platforms. With the maturing oil and gas fields in the North Sea, there is an ever-increasing need for platform abandonment, decommissioning and removal. Special techniques have been developed by European companies to cope with the specific problems imposed by the size of the structures and the hostile environment.

The workshop will present the techniques and developments of the companies in question, and provide an overview of special removal techniques.
