Towards universal access to information

The European Commission, DG XIII, will hold a conference entitled "Towards universal access to information: The generic services at work for the European information infrastructure" in Brussels on 30 May 1995. It is organized in the framework of the Trans-European Telecommunication Networks initiative.

The event will focus on the fast evolution and critical mass in the trans-European context of the generic services and the building tools for new telematic solutions within the context of the information society. Representations will discuss the harmonization of the existing services (providing, for example, e-mail, file transfer, information access) and the accelerated cooperative deployment at trans-European level of new services.

Major topics will include:

- User specifications for generic services;
- Generic services for direct end-to-end usage and for service provision;
- Obstacles to deployment and harmonization of generic services;
- Towards the redefinition of the concept of universal services;
- Enabling and boosting effects on European SMEs, content and online service providers;
- Strategic moves and offerings from the industry (software, services, appliances, networks);
- Round table on initiative proposals.
