The Tenth International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on 18-22 September 1995.

The conference will cover all aspects of heavy metal contamination and will provide an international forum for the exchange of information for environmental scientists and industrialists in this area.

The European Commission will participate in the session devoted to the development of quality objectives for water, soils and sediments which will be chaired by Dr. Philip Quevauviller of the specific programme for Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) under the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological and demonstration (1994-1998). The session will cover the following areas:

- Background concentrations of trace metals in seawater;
- The application of chemical equilibrium models in predicting metal toxicity in Dutch soils;
- Relation between soil composition and field-based partition coefficients for heavy metals;
- The role of the SMT programme in the harmonization and evaluation of analytical methodologies for the determination of heavy metals in environmental metrics.
