The Inter-Regional Information Society Initiative (IRISI) is organizing a conference under the title "Strategies to build the Information Society in the regions". The conference will be held in Torino, Italy, on 5-7 October 1995.

IRISI was set up by six European regions (North-West England, Sachsen, Nord Pas-de-Calais, Valencia, Central Macedonia and Piemonte), with the support of the European Commission (DG XIII and DG XVI). Its objective is to promote the development of the Information Society at regional level.

The European Commission has encouraged this regional initiative through two complementary support measures:

- Financial assistance for the development of a regional strategy and action programme within each region;
- Support for the establishment of a European network of the six regions, including a network bureau in Brussels and a network management committee.

The role of the network management committee is to stimulate the exchange of experience and to support inter-regional collaboration through joint seminars, working visits, newsletters and working groups.

The IRISI conference "Strategies to build the Information Society in the Regions" falls within this context and is intended to be a key event in the exchange of experience and achievements between the six regions. It will include presentations on the regional initiatives developed under IRISI and the European Union's policies for the development of the Information Society in the regions. It will also feature round table and plenary discussions on various aspects of the development of a regional strategy in this area.
