A European Commission research workshop on "Non-destructive testing to evaluate danger due to environmental effects on historic monuments" will be held in Trieste, Italy, on 15-17 February 1996. The workshop is aimed primarily at researchers in the field of non-destructive testing, professionals working on restoration problems and administrative officers involved in the conservation of historical monuments.

The main issues to be addressed by the workshop will concern the effects of humidity, temperature and chemical balance of the air, vibration and other environmental effects on the condition of historic monuments.

The aim of the workshop is to:

- Provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of research activities and recent results in the field of non-destructive investigation methods which have been funded by the European Commission's Environment and Climate programme;
- Review the state-of-the-art, in the European Union and abroad, in the area of non-destructive tests and promote the mutual exchange of information on common strategies for future research and development;
- Promote non-destructive tests as an important tool for monitoring monuments, evaluating reinforcement techniques and enhancing the conservation of Europe's cultural heritage.

Proposals for papers or posters may be submitted, before 27 November 1995, in the following subject areas:

- Acoustic emission, nuclear techniques, thermography, moisture measurements, ground penetrating radar, electro-magnetic waves, sonic techniques, image analysis, X-ray tomography;
- Special computational approaches, such as numerical methods applied to tomography and to system identification.
