The Regionlink Initiative
Interest in electronic trade and cooperation over the Internet has grown enormously in the past year. As a result of infrastructure and technology developments, businesses in many European regions are now able, at very modest cost, to develop new markets and services.
The Regionlink concept, a prototype regional trading network, was developed by the EU-funded RITE project. In the proposed organizational structure, local services will be provided by a network of autonomous associate organizations, situated in each of the participating regions. A central Regionlink core organization will provide a range of value-added and support functions. Each associate organization will:
- Design and manage information contact related to its region;
- Liaise and develop business relationships with local organizations in the private and public sectors.
Associate organizations will normally be commercial companies. However, other legal structures will not be precluded, The key criteria is that the associate must have sufficient resources and skill to provide effective service to its clients. Each organization will pay an initial fee and make an ongoing contribution to Regionlink costs in proportion to the revenue which it generates. It will also be expected to conform to the Regionlink policies in order to ensure that there is a consistent identity and quality level in all participating regions.
The aim of the present workshop is to stimulate and facilitate the development of new partnerships and, thereby, the extension of the Regionlink network.
