An international symposium on "Optical systems design and Production II" will be held in Glasgow, UK, on 12-16 May 1996. The event is being organized by the European Optical Society (EOS) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) with the support of the European Commission.

The symposium, a follow-up to a first conference held in Berlin in 1992, will review recent developments in the design and manufacture of optical components, thin film coatings and optical systems. It will also provide an opportunity for interaction between the four communities involved in technology transfer: research and development groups, manufacturers, users and funding agencies.

The challenge presented by new market opportunities will require the development and adoption of new designs and technologies. Changes in the world situation have resulted in a much greater emphasis on cost-effective design and manufacture, and also an increase of interest in modern techniques that reduce size and complexity of optical systems.

Specific areas to be covered by the symposium include:

- Design and engineering of optical systems;
- Specification, measurement and tolerance budgeting;
- Development in optical production technology;
- Developments in optical component coating.
