A conference entitled "Lifelong learning for the Information Society (LILIS)" will be held in Genoa, Italy, on 25-27 March 1996. This conference is one of the main events of the European Year of Lifelong Learning and forms part of the programme of the Italian Presidency of the EU. It is organised under the auspices of DG III (Industry), DG V (Employment, Industrial Relations and Social Affairs) and DG XXII (Education, Training and Youth) of the European Commission.

The conference will seek to identify the key issues to be addressed, and actions to be taken, to ensure Europe's industrial competitiveness and social stability in the Information Society. The event is organized around three major themes for learning in the Information Society:

- What are the new profiles for jobs in the Information Society?;
- What should be learnt and how can enterprises and society be best structured to provide the necessary learning?;
- What are the new approaches to learning demanded and facilitated by the Information Society?

A number of satellite sessions and tutorials on key topics will also be available, including an "industrial showcase" which will provide "hands-on" experience of state-of-the-art learning tools and technologies.
