The fifth international conference "The future of science has begun" will take place in Milan, Italy, on 15-16 February 1996. The conference, which is being organized by the Carlo Erba Foundation and is being supported by Directorate-General XII of the European Commission (Science, Research and Development), will cover the topics "The communication of science to the public" and "Science and the media".

The conference will focus on both theoretical and practical aspects of the communication of science to the public (newspapers, television, audiovisuals, etc.). The aim of the conference is to develop a critical understanding of the changes and innovations that science and technology generate and encourage enthusiasm for research in young people. It will also examine the new frontiers of the popularization of science through the media.

Conference sessions will include:

- Why inform the public ?;
- Communicating science to the public;
- The representation of science;
- Science versus the media: How good are the media ?;
- The role of the media.
