The second workshop of the Mediterranean Targeted Project (MTP) will take place in Crete, Greece, on 1-3 February 1996. The workshop is being organized by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of marine science and technology (MAST), in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Biology in Crete.

The MTP is presently the main project of the MAST programme in the Mediterranean Sea and involves 180 scientists from 14 EU Member States. The aim of the workshop is to give scientists participating in MTP the opportunity to interact directly and exchange information and ideas on present and future research in the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists from third Mediterranean countries will also be invited to attend.

The topics to be covered by the workshop will include:

- General circulation studies;
- Biogeochemical exchanges between the continental margin and the open sea;
- The role of key biological processes and their influence on biogeochemical cycles;
- The biogeochemical composition of deep sea sediments and waters;
- Benthic community structures in areas with contrasting productivity regimes;
- Sediment metabolic and diagenetic studies;
- Microbiological studies;
- Ecosystems analysis.
