A conference entitled "Opportunities for renewable energy technologies in Europe - Overcoming institutional and non-technical barriers" will be held in London, UK, on 22-23 February 1996. The conference is being organised by the UK Solar Energy Society (UK-ISES) in collaboration with the British Photovoltaic Association (PV-UK) and other organizations.

This two-day event will aim to address the energy issues seen to be obstructing the large-scale integration of renewable energy technology into national, regional and local energy plans. In doing this, it will look at:

- Individual experiences of technologies;
- Successful national and international programmes and initiatives;
- New ways of financing renewable energy projects and programmes.

The conference is aimed at:

- Regional electricity company business planners who wish to develop a more competitive edge in their energy mix;
- Professionals within both the renewable and associated industries who want to find new ways of overcoming current hurdles to implementation and financing;
- Engineers and consultants who need to be at the forefront of energy developments, and who want to increase their UK and/or export markets;
- Local authority executives and councillors who wish to both share their experiences and learn from the experiences of others;
- Planners who want to know more about the technologies in order to make decision processes easier.

The conference programme will include presentations of the Community's JOULE/THERMIE programme for research, technological development and demonstration in the field of non-nuclear energy (1994-1998), and the ALTENER programme for the promotion of renewable energy sources in the Community (1993-1997).
