A conference on "Natural and anthropogenically induced hazards - large earthquakes in the geological record" will take place in Isthmia, Greece on 18-24 May 1996. Organized by the European Science Foundation, with the support of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of human capital and mobility (HCM), the conference will examine what can be learnt about the seismic cycle from conventional field geology, palaeoseismology and geomorphology.

The conference programme will focus on the advantages and limitations of geological methods with respect to conventional approaches, both in high- and low-seismicity areas and on how the current perception of seismic hazard has been modified by incorporating geological evidence into earthquake recurrence models.

Some grants will be available from the HCM programme to enable the participation of young researchers, notably from the less favoured regions of the European Union. It is possible that some funds will also become available for participants from Central and East European countries.
