The first SME Technology Days, aimed at stimulating SME participation in the Community's research programmes, will take place in Brussels, Belgium, from 30 to 31 October 1996. The event is organized by DG XII of the European Commission.

About 99.8% of all enterprises in Europe are SMEs (having less than 500 employees). In the light of ever-increasing global competition, many SMEs need to innovate and internationalize their strategies. The Community research programmes are geared towards helping SMEs to achieve these goals.

The Technology Days will present the following special measures introduced for the purpose of facilitating the participation of SMEs in the Community's research programmes:

- Exploratory awards, providing SMEs with financial support for the preparation of project proposals (partner search, market and innovation surveys, feasibility studies);
- A scheme of cooperative research, whereby groups of low- and medium-tech SMEs facing similar problems but with little or no research capacity can outsource the required RTD work to a third party (e.g. a university or research organization).

During the Technology Days, SMEs with ideas for proposals may benefit from a free pre-screening service offered by the Commission. The event will be addressed by Mrs. Cresson, Commissioner responsible for research, education and training.
