A research seminar entitled "Attracting private investment to sustainable energy" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 23 to 25 October 1996. It is organized by Energy 21, an organization which aims to promote sustainable energy systems and energy efficiency, and sponsored by the Commission's JOULE/THERMIE programme for non-nuclear energy.

The objectives of the meeting are to:

- Demonstrate what has been achieved to date by the private sector within the existing regulatory frameworks;
- Encourage European project developers and equipment manufacturers to turn to private financial institutions for sustainable energy projects;
- Incite public authorities to work with the private sector in a proactive manner to increase public/private financial cooperation and use public resources to leverage private investment.

The seminar will use case studies to illustrate the different financing mechanisms.
