Health and safety in the nuclear age

The third meeting of the "Standing conference on health and safety in the nuclear age" will be held in Luxembourg from 26 to 27 November 1996. The conference, organized by DG XI of the European Commission, will have as its theme "Informing the public on European radiation protection standards".

The conference will introduce recent changes in the philosophy of the Community's radiation protection approach and, in particular, in the Basic Safety Standards Directive. Topics covered will include:

- Reduction of the annual dose limits for occupational exposure and exposure of the public;
- The extension of the scope of the Directive towards potential, accidental and emergency exposures;
- The introduction of constraints as a tool of the optimization process;
- The taking into account of exposure from natural radiation sources at work;
- The development of new exemption levels for radioactive substances regarding reporting and authorization.

The conference is aimed at those involved in disseminating information about radiation protection to the general public. Participants may be involved in the mass media, information services or educational institutions.
