A colloquium on "Satellite observation for sustainable development in the Mediterranean area" will be held in Frascati, Italy, from 2 to 3 October 1996. The event is supported by DG XII (Science,research and development) of the European Commission.

The aim of the colloquium is to bring together experts interested in the preservation of the Mediterranean basin to exchange ideas and information about the use of satellite observation techniques. Speakers at the event will include representatives of the Commission, the United Nations as well as a number of national organizations involved in sustainable development issues in the Mediterranean area.

The colloquium will have four sessions as follows:

- Challenges for sustainable development cooperation in the Mediterranean area;
- Current experience of satellite applications for sustainable development;
- Technologies and space-based services;
- New programmes and opportunities for expanding applications and services.
