A seminar on "Cooperation in the structuring of European territory - Atlantic area" will be held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on 8 October 1996. The seminar is one of a series being organized by the European Commission, DG XVI, and the Committee of the Regions of the European Union.

The seminar will discuss the issues relating to spatial planning in the Atlantic arc. Topics to be covered will include:

- A diagnosis and evaluation of the problems and potentials of the Atlantic arc;
- Balance and perspectives for transnational cooperation within the Atlantic arc.

Speakers at the conference will include Mrs. Monika Wulf-Mathies, Commissioner responsible for regional policy, and Mr. Pasqual Maragall, President of the Committee of the Regions. The conference will cover the work being done by the Commission in the spatial planning field, particularly the "Europe 2000" pilot projects. Other areas to be discussed include the problems of ports and maritime transport and the integrated management of coastal areas.
