A conference entitled "Cooperatives - New technology, research and innovation" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 29 to 30 November 1996. Organized by the European Committee of Workers' Cooperatives (CECOP), the conference is supported by DG XII and DG XXIII of the European Commission.

The conference aims to address the conditions and needs of cooperatives in Europe in relation to their participation in Community research. Cooperatives face similar obstacles to SMEs in accessing European funding. In particular, they suffer from a lack of resources to find the necessary partners in other Member States, and difficulties in raising capital.

The conference will focus on the opportunities available in Community RTD programmes, using case studies and speakers from the Commission services responsible for the specific RTD programmes. As well as providing information on the opportunities available, the conference will allow cooperatives to meet possible partners for research projects from all over Europe. A number of experts in RTD will be available to provide advice, both to individual enterprises and in discussions with potential partners.
